I got it online, it arrived a few days ago and the first thing we noticed as I hastily tore away the packaging was a smell.

It wasn’t a strong smell, and not necessarily a bad one either, just… invasive. And distinctly Rural.

I assume the company is based on a farm, and…

The rope is not from a farm, that is the smell of natural hemp. Instead of the sink with detergent, you should boil it in water for 2 or more hours. The horsey smell with diminish to a nice earthiness, much more subtle. The longer you boil the less aroma you will end up with, but also the less tensile strength the rope will have. It can get a soft as old blue jeans if you boil long enough.

The better aroma alternative for natural fiber rope is jute, which smells more like anise, fennel, or sassafras root (think black licorice).

There is also synthetic hemp, which can be very convincing, but smells like nothing.

Why? So they can think that everything they touch turns to gold? So they will grow up with a false sense of confidence, only to find as soon as they step into the world what it feels like to receive constructive criticism and cry every night because the world doesn’t fawn over every fart? So they can feel miserable about themselves when their boss says they need to have a better attitude and higher production?

Do them a favor and praise them appropriately to their level of experience, and guide them towards their best (which means telling them the blunt truth sometimes), rather then make them think anything they do is super good.

I don’t know if this was written by a teenager or a parent. If it was a teenager, its is excusable because they don’t know shit yet. If it was a parent, they had better brace themselves for the teen years, because they have no idea what kind of dramatic reactions to simple situations they will be facing.
